Auditions for the Computer Age

There’s no denying that computers and technology have radically affected the way we enjoy new films, theatrical productions, live concerts, and industry trade shows. So, too, have the Internet and cell phones impacted the way in which aspiring actors, singers and dancers learn about where the audtions are. No longer do they have to relentlessly troll through trade magazine classifieds, loiter around the commissary bulletin boards, or rely on the friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend to spill the latest rumors about movie casting calls. Today’s casting calls are just as likely to show up as email alerts or text messages; it’s just a matter of figuring out who’s in the cyber loop, what kind of referral services they provide, and how to sign on.

Where the Auditions Are for Beginners

The following is a beginner’s list of resources that electronically publicize where the auditions are, include links to regional booking representatives, photographers and coaches, and even let subscribers post bios and a variety of head shots. It goes without saying, of course, that wannabe stars need to be savvy and cautious in terms of researching opportunities before officially signing up, especially those that seem to charge questionable or exorbitant fees for their referrals, make claims—especially glowing testimonials—that can’t be substantiated, or recommend that subscribers enroll in pricey acting classes or private voice lessons in order to improve their chances for selection.

Casting Audition.com

CastingAudition.com is a national online database that is updated daily and reflects industry casting needs. Visitors to this website are free to browse for specific talent listings that interest them, and then submit their contact information. This service then provides the requestor with the appropriate contact information in order to schedule,or show up for, where the auditions are.

Fame-By-Phone

Is that your cell phone ringing? Maybe it’s your next acting job! Fame-By-Phone keeps its on-the-go subscribers in the know by transmitting up-to-the-minute audition information in the form of convenient text messages.

Backstage.com

Backstage.com is a website designed to appeal to both film and stage aspirants. Casting notices for upcoming TV, movie, and theatrical productions are posted in five separate regions: West Coast, East Coast, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Florida. There’s even a function whereby actors can post their online resumes. And while they’re waiting to hear where the auditions are, Backstage.com is replete with industry interviews, reviews, and helpful tips and tricks for the acting profession. Even aspiring screenwriters can find useful information on this site for submitting original material.

Explore Talent

Explore Talent is a free website that rewards actors and models with a broad list of talent opportunities (including industry trade shows and commercial advertising) as well as links to a diverse range of dance and voice studios, booking agencies, professional photographers, and acting coaches.

Casting Call Pro

Casting Call Pro is international in its current scope, specializing in listings for United States, United Kingdom, Canadian, and Australian professionals who want to know where the auditions are for movies, stage, broadcasting, or commercial and cable television. Unlike other websites, however, Casting Call Pro limits its resources and referrals to subscribers who have already graduated from accredited schools and who have at least three professional acting credits.

Start Now!

Unless you’ve been living at the bottom of a well, you’ve probably heard that Reality TV is very big these days. Star Now is a site that recruits plenty of these programs’ star-struck competitors, in addition to dancers, musicians, models, and movie extras. On a humorous note regarding the latter, the need for extras continues to decline. Why? Because the technology that makes today’s films so amazing has also perfected techniques of making CGI (computer generated imagery) clones that can pass for the real thing in crowd scenes. Mannequins also spend a lot of time onscreen these days, especially when bleachers and background restaurant tables need to be filled and not enough human volunteers turn up for auditions.

Auditions.net

Auditions.net is an online service that allows its visitors to browse casting calls by individual states, as well as seek out employment in union and non-union productions, university films, game shows, music videos, commercials, theater, and industrial/training/corporate videos.

Other Ways to Break In

Do people often tell you that you have a great voice? Can you do foreign accents and funny impressions? The following websites may have a perfect spot for you to start exercising those vocal chords...and getting paid for it: Reel Moment, and Sun Spot Productions. Likewise, you may want to try the backdoor approach of working at a studio in a non-acting capacity while keeping an ear to the ground for upcoming productions. This is where a site such as Showbiz Jobs is a good one to bookmark and conduct your searches by job, by geographic region and by specific studio.
