Where Can I Purchase HD DVD Movies
From LoveToKnow Movies
Ever asked yourself "Where can I purchase HD DVD Movies?" Well, here are a few leads for you.
About HD DVD Movies
If you did not already know it, there are only two types of movies you can purchase in High Definition format: HD DVD's and Blu-Ray discs. As everyone knows, although it is more widely available, everything Blu-Ray is notoriously expensive. Case in point: an HD DVD player sells for around $250 while a Blu-Ray DVD player retails for upwards of around $600. So, what is the difference between regular DVD's and HD DVD's? Here is a quick rundown:
- More detail – High Definition discs versus regular DVD's can give you up to six times better picture quality.
- Sound quality – HD DVD's are manufactured with more bandwidth for higher sound quality.
That's about it. Not too complicated right? Though those two items don't seem like much on paper, there is an extremely noticeable difference between regular DVD's and HD DVD's on your television screen. Now to answer the question of "Where can I purchase HD DVD movies?" The short answer is plenty of places.
Purchasing HD DVD Players
Here is a list of online stores in which you can purchase HD DVD movies:
- Movies Unlimited – This is one of the best places to search for out of print or hard to find movies. Movies Unlimited of course, also has all the latest and greatest new releases.
- Apple TV – You can purchase a number of HD DVD movies via Apple TV.
- Hi Def DVD – This online store has one of the widest selections of HD DVD's available for purchase. The prices are also great with movies ranging from around $10 to around $30.
- Amazon – Offers over 600 titles in HD DVD format and of course, Amazon always has reasonable prices for their products, including HD DVD's.
- DVD Pacific – Get movies like Carlito's Way, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and I Love You, Man in Hi Def format from DVD Pacific.
- Deep Discount – This online store offers high definition DVD's for as low as $5.99.
Before you go on an HD DVD buying spree, there are a few things you need to keep in mind before making your purchases.
Ending HD DVD Sales
Perhaps one of the biggest issues with buying HD DVD's is that some stores are completely discontinuing this format in favor of Blu-Ray.
- Toshiba - One of the largest distributors and manufacturers of HD DVD's, Toshiba, officially discontinued making and selling this format in 2008.
- Walmart – The largest retail chain on the planed decided to stop selling HD DVD's very shortly after Toshiba made its announcement that it would no longer be manufacturing the discs. Walmart now exclusively only offers Blu-Ray discs to its hi def movie lovers.
- NetFlix – No longer offers HD DVD movie rental or purchases.
- Best Buy – Also in 2008, Best Buy stopped selling HD DVD's and subsequently stocked their shelves with Blu-Ray discs. Consumers were a bit disgruntled when the store decided simply to return all of its unsold DVD's to its distributors rather than offer them at deeply discounted prices to its consumers.
With a number of major stores no longer offering this format "Where can I purchase HD DVD movies" is a very valid question. Even though many major stores are putting an end to their HD DVD's sales, sales numbers across the industry remain relatively high for HD DVD's, so the demand is still out there so the HD DVD format should be around for a while longer. Though, these movies may become increasingly difficult to find in stores and online. So, you might want to stock up on your favorite HD DVD movies now, before the format is completely obsolete.
