Upcoming Science Fiction Movies
From LoveToKnow Movies
There are plenty of upcoming science fiction movies, so which ones are going to be good? Which ones should you see in the theater and when should you wait until they're released on DVD? The past year has been slow for science fiction movies, but it looks like there's going to be a nice selection to choose from if you are a science fiction fan and have felt this sci-fi drought has hampered your movie style.
Upcoming Science Fiction Movies Roll Call
Star Trek
Everyone loves William Shatner as James T. Kirk, the captain of the Starship Enterprise. But what about happened before Kirk was Captain Kirk, or Spock was Number Two. Star Trek, coming out in 2009, gives us glimpses of the officers before they were officers. J.J. Abrams (of Lost and Mission Impossible: III) teams up with the screenwriters of Transformers and Mission Impossible: III to gives us a younger Star Trek. With Abrams and the crew of screenwriters behind the film, you can expect a lot of action since most of the film probably won't take place on the Enterprise. Leonard Nimoy makes a cameo, though there's no word yet on if William Shatner will.
Terminator: Salvation
In 2018, Skynet continues to be at it. Most of the human race has been destroyed, but Connor (played by Christian Bale) bands together with a group of survivors to stymie the machines. He meets Marcus Wright, who only has memories of his last days on Death Row. They must infiltrate Skynet and destroy the machines. This fourth installment could take place between the second and third Terminator or even after the third, not much is clear on the timeline. James Cameron has nothing to do with the film except for the original character creation. McG (We are Marshall, Chuck) directs.
Knowing
In 2008, a father and son uncover a time capsule on the son's school grounds which contain items from 50 years ago. One of the items is a sheet with coded messages. Nicholas Cage plays the father who soon learns the codes are prophecies and predictions that have all come true. Everything in the message of the past 50 years has come true and there is one last message left that implies that Cage must figure out to save the world. From the I, Robot and Dark City director comes this sci-fi mystery that will get you thinking.
2012
The Mayans believed that 2012 will be the end of the world because that's when the Mayan calendar ends. John Cusak, Woody Harrelson, and Amanda Peet must contend with disasters like volcanic eruptions, bad hurricanes, and other weather-related events. Some people have figured this to basically be The Day After Tomorrow 2 because of the nature of the story and the special effects that will be needed. Besides, Roland Emmerich, (yes, the very same) directs. After viewing some of the trailers, you can see some of the similarities between 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow. This movie should redeem Emmerich after the mocked 10,000 B.C..
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
The third movie in the Underworld series isn't a sequel, but a prequel. Many have complained because Kate Beckinsale isn't in this one, but the story would not make sense. Centuries before the first Underworld, the Lycans were slaves to the "Death Dealers", or the vampires. One Lycan, Lucian, slowly rises up and bands together more Lycans to take down Viktor, the sadistic vampire king. The director, Patrick Tatopoulos, has only one previous direction credit (Birds of Passage, 2000), but has worked on Underworld: Evolutions in the special effects department. He has two other directing jobs upcoming, so it will be interesting to see how he can pull off this sequel with two veteran Underworld actors and one excellent TV actress.
2009: the Franchise Year
Expect a lot of sequel and franchise movies in 2009. Science fiction movies tend to grab a core set of fans quickly, which helps in the long run. Just take a look at Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Transformers. All are long-running franchises that have excellent core bases. The only problem you'll have with the upcoming science fiction movies this year is which one to commit to because there will be so many.
