About Starz Movie Channel

Launched in 1994, the Starz Movie Channel offered TCI cable system subscribers more up-to-date hit movies, unlike its sister channel Encore, which focused on movies from the 1960's to the 1980's. After finding its footing in the smaller TCI cable systems market, the channel was released to other cable television providers as well. Like its sister channel, Encore, Starz offers a multiplex of channels as well.

The Starz Multiplex

Beginning in 1996, the Starz Movie channel expanded and began offering a multiplex of channels focusing on different genres and themes.

Starz 2

This first multiplex channel launched in 1996 but over the years, went through a few name changes. In 1999, the name changed to Starz Theater and in 2005 it was changed to Starz Edge. This movie channel offered by Starz Entertainment focuses on newly released films.

Starz Cinema

The Starz Cinema channel was added to the Starz Movie multiplex channels in 1999. Starz Cinema features independent films and art house films. If you love non-mainstream movies, Starz Cinema is perfect for you.

Starz Comedy

One of the more recent additions to the Starz Movie multiplex channels. Starz Comedy made its debut in 2005 and features all funny films, all of the time. This channel also features an original series called Stand Up or Shut Up. The show focuses on the ins and outs of trying to become successful as a stand up comedian.

Starz Kids and Family

Just as the name says, this channel airs only family friendly films. Starz Kids and Family was once offered as two separate channels until the network merged them in 2005.

Starz in Black

This multiplex channel also underwent a few name changes. It was originally named BET Movies: Starz, then changed to Black Starz until the network finally settled on Starz in Black in 2005. Starz in Black airs films that feature African American actors and actresses and shows both recent films as well as classics.
