There are a vast number of popular Scooby Doo cast and characters in the 2002 film. Each character brings his or her own personality to the remake of classic cartoon.

Plot of Scooby Doo

Written by James Gunn and produced by Charles Roven, the 2000 film Scooby Doo tells the story of the gangs separation. After the Luna Ghost case is solved, the group divides until two years later due to problems at the Spooky Island Amusement Park. Things have changed for the group as Fred is now a movie star, Daphne is a blackbelt and Velma works for NASA. While Shaggy and Scooby have stopped working on mysteries, they have still remained companions.

The group is reunited on the island and are told that a spell is cast on visitors that essentially makes visitors zombies. After much investigation, the crew discovers the nefarious Mondavarious. They work as a team to enact a plan to destroy the demons on the island. When Daphne carries out the final leg of the plan, defeating Zarkus, all is saved. The crew agrees to investigate a new mystery they are told of together.

Scooby Doo Cast and Characters

The main characters of the film version of Scooby Doo includes 5 main characters that make up the 'crew' or Mystery Inc.:

  • Fred Jones
  • Daphne Blake
  • Shaggy Rogers
  • Velma Dinkley
  • Scooby Doo

Fred Jones

In the time the group has been separated, Fred has become a movie star. He is known for his boyish good looks, white shirt with collar, neckpiece and blonde hair. He is a straight laced kind of guy.

Daphne Blake

Though her looks may fool one, she has become a blackbelt. With perfectly coifed hair and purple dress, she is ready for action. She is also amorous with Fred Jones.

Shaggy Rogers

Often thought to be a slacker, Shaggy is just that: he is unshaven and wears a loose green shirt. He has a never ending stomach and proclaims popular quote 'zoinks!' whenever he is surprised or amazed by something. In the film, Shaggy finds a love interest who has all the same passions in life as him (she loves to eat) but is allergic to dogs.

Velma Dinkley

Often touted as the smartest of the bunch, Velma has gone on to work for NASA. She wears an orange sweater and glasses, as her vision is quite horrible without them.

Scooby Doo

As an oversized, crime fighting dog, Scooby often comes to the rescue of his friends. He is the best friend (and fellow foodie) of Shaggy and spends much time begging for Scooby snacks.

Other Important Characters

In the film, a character who occasionally appeared in the cartoon appears in the movie in a dastardly role. Scrabby Doo, nephew of Scooby Doo, is the robot version on Mondavarious. He later vows to get the Scooby Doo gang.

While Modavarious takes on many different forms in the film (from the real Mondavarious to Scrappy Doo), the character is a great example of a double foil character.

Final Thoughts

Though received poorly by critics, Scooby Doo did well in theaters as fans flocked to see the live screen version of their favorite cartoon characters. The Scooby Doo cartoons in their many renditions are popular with fans who can relate to at least one of the major characters while still laughing away. Many even look to the film to provide them a new version of one of their favorite cartoons. For those people, the movie helps to fill a void.
