What is Plugged In

Plugged In is a publication created by the Focus on the Family group. The publication itself was created to give parents, teens, ministers and youth group leaders essential tools so that they can better understand (and make their way through) the culture in which they live. Plugged In realizes the type of influence and pull that the entertainment industry has on the family unit and how it impacts out culture for the good and the bad. They hope to create a dialogue among families and individuals to better understand the world in which they live.

You can find Plugged In on the Internet, but can also find it in print by either going to a magazine stand (find a list on their website) or buy it from the website.

Christian Reviews and Rated R Movies

R-Rated movies are meant for mature audiences and Plugged In reviews them. You may ask yourself why a publication that is dedicated to family values would review those kinds of movies. As we all know, children should not be seeing movies of that rating level. Not all parents restrict their children from watching these kinds of movies, and kids, if they really want to, can get ahold of them to watch. That is part of the reason.

Another reason is that these movies are fast becoming the norm and being marketed to mainstream audiences. Many films with an R rating like Saw, American Pie and Role Models are being marketed to teens. It is Plugged In’s goal to arm parents with as much information as possible about the movies that their kids may watch or have a chance to watch. They do this for two reasons:

  1. Parents need to understand what types of movies the Hollywood movers and shakers are releasing that are geared to teens and most likely what less discerning peers are watching
  2. To be able to properly discuss with the child just why a particular movie is bad.

That is why Plugged In looks beyond labels to provide a breakdown of the movie

Reviews on Films Not Yet Released

Plugged In, thanks to their geographical location, is limited in what they can review. They aren’t usually given advance copies of movies, so you won’t readily see a review of a film that is due out next week, let alone tomorrow. Patience is needed in order to get a proper review, especially when it comes down to more adult material.

No Film Grading, Just Straight Talk

Unlike many other movie review sites there is often some sort of a grading. You can go on the numbering system or a letter grade, use a few stars for example, but Plugged In movie reviews don't take that approach to their review process. They view the process as though they were traveling down a highway. You continue to go forward despite the yellow road signs--the warning signs. Their reviews are straightforward and precise, serving to give the reader an overview of the movie while pointing out just why the film itself is not suitable. The final judgment is then up to you.
