Over the Hedge starts off with R.J. (Bruce Willis), a con artist of a raccoon, foraging for food, but cannot find any. So he goes to the bear's cave, to steal some of his winter food reserves. And then the fun begins.

Bear Troubles

When he arrives at the cave, the bear is already midway through hibernation and fast asleep. R.J. then gets greedy and steals all the food instead of taking only as much as he needs. On the way out, he can't resist taking the last morsel of food, a can of Spuddies, right out of the bear's hand.

The bear wakes up to find R.J. stealing his food and threatens to kill him. Suddenly the food falls off the cliff into the street below, where a truck runs over it. R.J. talks his way out of being killed by promising to replace the food in one week. R.J.

Over the Hedge Con Game

R.J. runs into a group of fresly awakened hibernators led by a turtle, Verne (Garry Shandling). The are setting up plans to forage for food. Soon Hammie, the squirrel (Steve Carell), finds a mysterious hedge that wasn’t there before hibernation. The group gathers around the wall of bushes, better known as a hedge to humans, and discusses what this could be and what they should do. In the process, they name the hedge Steve.

R.J. decides the best way to gather the huge amount of food he needs in one week is to simply trick these animals into stealing it for him. So he shows them that "over the hedge" there is a vast new housing development, which was built over the winter. He shows them the best ways to gather food and, in the process, how to replace the bear's stolen and destroyed food in the two days before it’s due.

The Delimma

During their raids on the human houses, R.j. grows attached to these animals and must wrestle over the problem to take the food or get eaten by the bear.

A Worthwhile Movie

I watched Over the Hedge several times with my famliy, yet still found it to be a good movie after each time. It appealed to the entire family -- from the toddlers up to the parents. The off-colored humor, like Hammy burping the alphabet, made the kids giggle.
