New York Film Festival
From LoveToKnow Movies
Each September, the New York Film Festival showcases the newest cinematic efforts of directors from all around the world. The 2005 festival included eventual Oscar nominees like Good Night, and Good Luck and Capote, as well as a host of other impressive full length and short films.
The Film Society Of Lincoln Center
The Film Society of Lincoln Center was founded in 1969 with the intention of recognizing new filmmakers, offering them support, and increasing awareness of the art of film. The Film Society hosts the New York Film Festival each year, as well as the New Directors/New Films festival which celebrates new film artists. The society also runs a state of the art theater (The Walter Reade Theater) and publishes Film Comment, the most respected cinema journal in the US.
Although the society has been in existence for only 37 years, the Festival saw its 43rd event last year.
2005 New York Film Festival
While the obvious highlight of any film festival is the movies it shows, the New York Film Festival offers much more than just movies. Events at the 2005 festival also included HBO Directors' Dialogues - up close and personal interviews with some of the festival's directors. Included in the feature were Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, directors of L'Enfant (The Child), Neil Jordan (Breakfast on Pluto), Michael Winterbottom (Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story), and Patrice Chéreau (Gabrielle).
Another special feature at the festival was The Squid, the Whale, the Filmmaker: A Conversation with Noah Baumbach. Baumbach, director of 1995's Kicking and Screaming discussed his new film The Squid and the Whale, as well as his outlook on life and how it intersects with writing and directing.
The Movies
The films are the real meat of the Festival and the 2005 event boasted a list of features and shorts it could certainly be proud of. It included two films that would go on to receive multiple Oscar nominations and one major win (Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Actor for Capote) as well as much critical acclaim.
