New Movies

From LoveToKnow Movies

New movies are exciting for a lot of film fans. When we enter the theater with our overpriced popcorn and soda in hand and find our way to the seat we think is the absolute best in the house, we are sometimes more excited to see the previews of new movies than we are for the flick we just paid our seven bucks to get into. There's a certain magic about the movies, and new movies are a big part of that spark. Although DVD Sales and rentals (as well as illegal downloading) have hurt the movie industry a bit, we keep coming back for more - lured by the promise of new movies.

New Movies For Spring and Summer 2006

In the lull after Christmas and before Memorial Day, fewer new movies are released. Still, there are often enough titles released in early spring to keep movie fans buying tickets online and at the box office. This year is no different, as this list of upcoming new movies assures.

Silent Hill

Horror fans and video game fans will likely flock to this one from Tri-Star and director David Gans (Necronomicon, Crying Freeman). Taken from the survival horror video game series from Konami, Silent Hill promises to be an experience. It is loosely based on the story and events of the first game in the series (there are a total of four to date) that has to be one of the creepiest in all of video games. In fact, it is possible that Silent Hill, the game, is scarier than most horror films released over the past ten years. Imagining how frightening it can be on the big screen makes this a new movie that fans have been awaiting for some time. For more information, see the film's official site. Silent Hill is set for an April 21, 2006 release.

Scary Movie 4

From the scary to the silly, April 2006 will also give us the latest in a string of horror spoofs, Scary Movie 4. Helmed this time around by David Zucker (one of those responsible for Airplane!, Kentucky Fried Movie, and Ruthless People), Scary Movie 4 promises to have audiences howling as it spoofs films like War of the Worlds and Saw. Even Dr. Phil makes an appearance. This entry in the Scary Movie series comes out on April 14, 2006.

The Sentinel

If political intrigue and espionage are more to your liking, The Sentinel may be right up your alley. Directed by TV veteran Clark Johnson (episodes of Law & Order SVU and The Shield, among others) and starring Michael Douglas and Keifer Sutherland, The Sentinel tells the story of a former Secret Service agent who attempts to foil a plot to assassinate the President. The Sentinel is scheduled for release on April 21, 2006.

Mission: Impossible 3

The movie that reportedly killed an episode of South Park (Tom Cruise is rumored to have threatened not to promote the movie if Comedy Central aired a repeat of an episode mocking Cruise and Scientology) has Tom Cruise returning as agent Ethan Hunt in the popular TV series turned movie series. Supporting cast includes Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Philip Seymore Hoffman (Capote), and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix). Set for a May 5, 2006 release, Mission Impossible 3 is bound to be the first summer blockbuster of the year. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams, creator of TV's Lost and Alias.

These are just a handful of new movies coming out in the spring 2006 season. We can also see X Men: The Last Stand, the Poseidon remake, and The Da Vinci Code before June.

New Movies Later This Year

Starting in early June, things will heat up at the box office. First we'll see Liev Schriber, Julia Styles, and a surprisingly evil Mia Farrow in a remake of The Omen released (of course) on June 6 (six, six, oh-six...get it?). Next Pixar and Disney will finally release Cars, the last collaboration of the two companies and the first that seems as if it will get a questionable reception.

The biggest news in June, however, is Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, the much-lauded return to the big screen of the Man of Steel. Newcomer Brandon Routh dons the blue tights, but most of us are stoked to see Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Perhaps he'll care enough about the role to shave his head, something the last big screen Luthor (Gene Hackman) was unwilling to do.

Even Later in 2006

As if a year that gives us Superman Returns hadn't already delivered like nobody's business, we're still only halfway through 2006. Some other notable titles that will come out before January rolls around again include:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (July 7)
  • Monster House (July 21)
  • Miami Vice (yes - THAT Miami Vice - July 28)
  • The U.S. vs. John Lennon (August 4)
  • World Trade Center (August 11)
  • Snakes on a Plane (August 18)
  • Clerks II (August 18)
  • How to Eat Fried Worms (August 25)
  • The Grudge 2 (October 13)
  • Saw III (October 27)
  • The Santa Clause 3 (November 3)
  • This Film is not Yet Rated (November 3)
  • Casino Royale (November 17)
  • Charlotte's Web (December 22)

Release dates, of course, may be subject to change. Information gathered from The Internet Movie Database.
