The Popularity of the Muppets

It seemed almost inevitable that characters with such unique features and discernable personalities would eventually become legendary figures in the annals of children's television. Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, molded these expressive puppet characters into veritable works of art.

Their bulging eyes, wide mouths and flexible limbs made the Muppets exceptionally appealing to youngsters. It wasn't only children who took to these enigmatic characters, though; even Hollywood wanted a piece of them, and it wasn't long before the Muppets were presenting at the Academy Awards, making guest appearances in feature films (like An American Werewolf in London and Rocky III) and sitcoms (including The Cosby Show and The West Wing, among others) and being interviewed by renowned television news magazines, such as 60 Minutes.

Famous Muppets

Ask anyone who their favorite Muppet is and the answer is likely to be one of two: Kermit the Frog or Miss Piggy. These two fan favorites need no introduction – their love story is fabled and flawed, and their unique looks and endearing personalities instantly commanded adoration. These two, in particular, have long been singled out and thrown into the spotlight on many occasions. Kermit the Frog has guest hosted many programs, including The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and even Larry King Live, while Miss Piggy has been interviewed by the likes of Rosie O'Donnell and Michael Parkinson (of England's Parkinson chat show).

Of course, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy aren't the only Muppets in existence. Other famous members of the group include:

  • Beaker
  • Gonzo
  • Fozzie Bear
  • Swedish Chef
  • Animal
  • Scooter
  • Rowlf the Dog
  • Sergeant Floyd Pepper
  • Statler and Waldorf

In addition to their long reign on The Muppet Show, the Muppets also held court on Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Jim Henson Hour and Muppets Tonight.
