Marcus Movie Theaters
From LoveToKnow Movies
Marcus Movie Theaters was founded by Ben Marcus in 1935. It all started with a single movie theater in Ripon, Wisconsin. Over the years, the company built upon its success and has grown into a major Midwest theater chain with screens in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota and Ohio. There is also a hotel division, Marcus Hotels and Resorts, which has properties in Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Missouri and Texas.
The Marcus Movie Theater Difference
Marcus Theaters offer the latest in movie-going technology including comfortable stadium seating and digital sound. One interesting thing about the chain is the size of some of its screens. While in many other chains, the screens are getting smaller to permit a larger number of auditoriums, the Marcus Theater chain has introduced some of the largest screens short of an IMAX screen. These are big screens for big fans of big movies!
Open Caption Films
Marcus Theaters was among the first theater chains in America to install Digital Theater Systems' Cinema Subtitling System, open-caption technology in their auditoriums. This new digital technology makes it possible for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons to enjoy the movies without the need for assistive devices. It also permits the projection of subtitles over foreign films. With this technology, the movie is projected from 35mm film, as usual, but captions or subtitles are superimposed over the bottom of the movie by a digital video projector rather than being either etched or overlaid onto the film itself as with older captioning technology.
Superscreens®
Considerably larger than the average movie theater screen, the SuperScreen® offers a big, bright picture with big digital sound featuring JBL Professional's Academy Award®-winning and THX-approved ScreenArray® sound system, which automatically corrects the spread of high frequency sound and ensures ultra-low distortion and uniform sound in every seat throughout the auditorium.
UltraScreens®
At 75 feet wide and 32 feet tall, more than 500 times larger than a typical 19-inch television screen, Marcus Movie Theaters' UltraScreens® offer a colossal, razor sharp picture and crystal clear digital sound in a comfortable stadium seating auditorium. UltraScreen audiences also enjoy powerful digital sound through a combination of JBL Professional's Academy Award® winning ScreenArray® cinema sound system run through Crown International's Digital B-Chain® technology.
Promotional Activities
To enhance the theater-going experience, Marcus Theaters offers a number of promotional items that include birthday parties at the theater; $2 Tuesdays, when popcorn and drinks are just $2 each; Spotlight Movie Night each Wednesday, when tickets for a selected current film are discounted to $5; Young at Heart, where anyone aged 60 or older can enjoy a movie at any Marcus Theaters until 5:30 p.m. for a mere $4. Some locations also offer a “Dinner and a Movie” discount in combination with a local restaurant. The company website offers information on all of these as well as current and coming attractions and a guide to movie ratings.
Locations
With locations in five states, 507 screens in 42 theaters, Marcus Theaters is certainly one of the larger regional chains in the country.
