Origins of the Crossword Puzzle
Crossword puzzles have long since been considered the most popular word puzzle in the world. The popularity of the crossword puzzle is unique due to the relatively young age of the puzzle itself. England saw the first crossword puzzle appear in the 19th century and it was derived from the word square. The first published crossword puzzle was devised by Arthur Wynne, a journalist from Liverpool. It is this published crossword puzzle that gives him the credit for inventing it. This puzzle was published December 21st, 1913 in the New York World.
The crossword puzzles from this era differ from the ones we know of today. The pattern used to be diamond shaped with no internal black squares. After about a decade the puzzle had found its way to nearly every single American news publication. It was during this time that the crossword puzzle changed to the type we know today.
Soon entire books were being published that contained many different crossword puzzles with many different themes. The Internet was soon on the horizon along with the computer age, and crossword puzzles became more and more advanced. One of the more popular crossword puzzles includes those that surround movies.
