Discount Movie Tickets

From LoveToKnow Movies

Discount movie tickets don’t have to be the Holy Grail of entertainment. There are many ways to get inexpensive tickets if paying full price gets annoying. The average movie ticket ranges from $6.50 to $10.00 depending if you live in a large city or a tiny town with a one-screen theater. Being savvy can net you some pretty good savings and you don’t have to be shady to try some of the following techniques.

Theater at night

The Most Obvious Discount Movie Tickets

To save a couple of dollars, try going to a matinee showing. Usually, any time before 5 p.m. is considered a matinee. Some theaters even go up to half the price of a full ticket. Now if you are real lucky and feel that watching a movie before noon is just fine, contact your local theater to see if they offer an even bigger discount for those movies. "Early Bird Specials" are more common now.

Corporate Programs

Call your local theaters to see if the company or business you work for has a special arrangement to offer discount tickets. Businesses that have a large core group of employees often set up employee discounts with theaters. This is good for the companies and theaters owners because it's a great benefit for the employees and brings in business to the theater. If you work for one of the following types of businesses, it's possible there may be an account already in place:

  • Medical industry. Especially hospitals or clinics because of the large number of employees.
  • Government/Municipality. There is a large number of employees that work for the state or individual counties and while you have discounts at other places like fitness clubs, you may not know if you have one at entertainment businesses like theaters.
  • Retail. Usually theaters seek out assistance from retailers because corporate chains don’t think of adding movie tickets as an employee benefit.

Starting a Company Program

If your employer doesn’t have a discount program with a local theater, you can partner with your boss to help start one. This method of finding discount movie tickets takes a little more work, but it is advantageous to you and fellow employees.

You can also attempt to start a company program if you own your own business. Use a little common sense when figuring out if this will work. If it's just you or you and a couple of employees, the movie theater may not figure the discounts to be worth it. But if you have a number of employees who are movie-goers or you can even commit a certain number of tickets a week, then the owner of the theater might say yes.

Bulk

For a one time discount when you have a big group going to the movies, try buying tickets in bulk. Committing to buying a certain amounts of tickets might get you a few dollars off per ticket. A good number to propose to the theater for discount movie tickets is anywhere from 10 to 15. Theaters bank on ticket buyers to purchase concessions, so the more people they can get inside the door is a chance for more concession sales.

Promotions

Watch for promotions. One of the biggest promotions for tickets is the inclusion of passes in new release movies with similar themes. You may have to wait a couple of weeks to use the pass, but that's the ultimate kind of discount. If you absolutely must see the movie before that and still want to use the pass, ask a manager to take a discount off the ticket instead of using it as a free ticket. Don't laugh, it does work.

Check with your local theater for seasonal promotions. For example, Cinemark usually has a summer deal where you can watch ten movies for five dollars or you can just pay one dollar per movie if you don't want to purchase the entire roster. Granted, the movies are older releases and play at one certain time on one certain day, but a movie for 50 cents? You can deal with that, right?
