Contact Movie Producers
From LoveToKnow Movies
Is it taboo to contact movie producers? It depends on your intentions. There are usually only a few reasons people get in contact with movie producers, so see if your reason falls below and heed the protocols associated with doing so.
Finding Contact Information
Finding contact information to get in touch with movie producers is not hard. Getting them to actually respond to inquiries or letters is another story. While you may have a general address for a movie producer, you may never find direct contact information unless you know someone who knows someone. Unfortunately, that's the way it is in Hollywood. However, with some help you can get pretty close.
IMDB
The International Movie Database lists thousand of movies. Besides movie information, you can also find company information. The site does not list addresses, but you can do a quick search on the Internet to find a movie company's website for their address. Just click on “Company Credits” to see who produced the movie. The phone numbers that you may find at the website are most likely the main phone numbers for the production company or the producer's office. You will probably get a receptionist who will take down your information and pass it along to the appropriate people.
To have a better chance of contacting movie producers, sign up for IMDBpro. With IMDBpro, you can get additional contact information. If you seek just a few addresses or phone numbers, then sign up for the free 14-day trial. A credit card is required. If you feel you need more time or the film industry is your profession, then stick with the monthly subscription of $14.95.
Some producers, actors and actresses have direct contact information (located in the "Contact" tab) like e-mail addresses or phone numbers. Don't expect the bigger name producers and production company owners to list their personal phone number or address. What you can find are direct lines and e-mail addresses to agents and representatives who then contact the producers. Use this information to query the person you're trying to reach.
Big Boulder Entertainment Links to Producers
At Big Boulder you can find links to producers' websites. This is a more direct database because you can just click on the links rather than seek out websites based on names alone. Most of the links listed are for major production companies like Shoreline Entertainment and Dreamworks, but you can find a few independent companies on the list.
Why Contact Movie Producers
Many people contact movie producers for only a few basic reasons:
- Asking them to read a script
- Hoping to get a part in their next movie or finding out how they can audition for one of the producer's movies
- Asking the producer to get in touch with an actor or actress they have worked with
- An interview
Those aren't bad reasons, just common ones that movie producers have heard over and over again.
Etiquette
No matter what your reason is to contact movie producers, basic etiquette should be followed.
- Don't get discouraged if you don't speak to a producer directly. They are busy people and while they don't want to offend anyone, it's easier to be consistent and let their assistants deal with any calls or correspondence. With that said, don't get belligerent with anyone who just wants to take your message. They have a job to do, just like you, so trust them to do that job.
- Whether you are calling or sending a letter, be brief. State who you are and the reason for the call or letter. Don't go into a long story about your life or how you've dreamed of talking to them. Everyone likes flattery, but insincerity and monotony is easy to detect.
- It's okay to follow-up with a producer. If you called or e-mailed the producer, a good time frame is to wait one week to do a follow-up. Do not follow-up on the weekends. Call or e-mail during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. If you've sent a letter with no response, then two to three weeks is a good time to wait before sending another letter.
