Classic Movies of the 70s
From LoveToKnow Movies
There are many classic movies of the 70s, but only a few sport such nostalgia to make the following list. They are in no particular order.
Star Wars
The first movie of George Lucas' trilogy set off the beginning of nerddom everywhere. Most of the characters are household names like Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Boba Fett. Star Wars is your classic movie of the 70s that had someone ordinary come of age through extraordinary circumstances. When pitched to the movie companies, it was tagged as a "soap opera in space".
Grease
What was the word? Grease was the word. A campy musical with sexual innuendo, tough talk and mean girls. What more could you want from one of the classic movies of the 70s? John Travolta and Olivia Newton John starred in this musical that showcased teenagers falling in love while getting through high school and encountering all the problems teenagers face, like pregnancy, betrayal, and bad dancing. That's classic, right?
Jaws
Swimming with sharks took on an all new meaning when Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider took to the ocean to hunt a human-killer. Steven Spielberg's aquatic hit still elicits fear of the water after watching, especially after you see all those scenes where there is quiet. Nothing else, just silence. The sequels and the 3-D version never lived up to what the original movie provided: unadulterated fear.
Alien
The year 1979 brought us Alien, a tale of one ship that lands in the wrong spot and begins encounter creatures of the…well, alien sort. Sigourney Weaver fires big guns and battles big beasts as she tries to survive the alien attacks. Alien has one of the most recognizable scenes in the movie industry. Do you know which one? One of the crew members is eating and all of a sudden begins to convulse. His stomach soon ripples horrendously and a tiny little alien crashes through his stomach lining. He growls then scampers away.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
This is another one of the classic movies of the 70s with Richard Dreyfuss. He plays a line worker who has an encounter with a UFO, or a huge cone of light, and is drawn back to an expansive part of the Nevada desert over and over again. He is haunted by strange visions and a five-note musical sequence that eventually becomes clear when the close encounter of the first and second kind becomes the third kind. He even builds a mashed potato statue of where he had the encounter.
Rocky
How can you forget Rocky? This is perhaps the greatest underdog movie of all time. Sympathetic characters, great boxing, and uplifting speeches make Rocky one movie that everyone should have in their collection. It's an even better movie when you realize that it was written by the star himself, Sylvester Stallone.
Superman
Christopher Reeve stars as Superman, one of comics' most intriguing superheroes with an interesting past. He is an alien with outstanding powers that is sent from his dying home planet. But his destiny isn't set in stone until he becomes an adult, and even then he grapples with the emotions that are making decisions for him. This movie has great science fiction, good story lines, and enough drama to make the greatest of heroes cry.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
There's a band of medieval knights searching for the Holy Grail, only to encounter all kinds of crazy obstacles like a rabid bunny and a castle full of virgins. Now that's the kind of adventure you'd like, right? The Monty Python comedy troupe takes their obscure British references and goes mainstream in order to tickle your funnybone.
The French Connection
This five-time Oscar winner stars Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider trying to figure out who is smuggling drugs in their city. Does it have a French connection? It better, with a title like it has! This movie has a really famous car chase scene through the streets of Brooklyn, New York.
Classic Movies of the 70s: Many a Number
There are many 70s movies considered "classics" and they don't have to be a majority favorite just to be a classic. They can be whatever movie you want. Just make sure that they are on Imdb's bottom 250.
