Arriving in Wonderland

Alice is bored. Her governess is reading to her from a book without pictures; it's her history lesson. Although the governess admonishes Alice to pay attention, Alice simply cannot help letting her mind wander. As she drifts off, she is talking about a world of her own and how it would be different from the world in which she lives, and then the white rabbit comes by. He is dressed in a nice waistcoat and carrying a large pocketwatch. Startled, Alice follows the rabbit to see where he is going, and she falls into a very deep hole.

Alice in Wonderland

Disney's Alice in Wonderland

At the bottom of the hole is a locked door, and, through its keyhole, Alice can see the rabbit hurrying off down a path. Alice is too big to fit through the door, though. The door tells Alice to drink from the bottle on the table, so Alice does, and she shrinks to the perfect size to fit through the door. But the door is locked, and the key is on the table, which is now miles above her. The door tells her to eat from the box which has suddenly appeared at her feet, and when she does, she grows to an immense size. After a horrible weeping fit, Alice sees the bottle and shrinks herself again, only to find herself adrift in a sea of her own tears. But now she can float through the keyhole of the door and continue her search for the white rabbit.

Adventures of Alice in Wonderland

In her search, Alice encounters many strange things: a cranky caterpillar smoking a hookah, a mad hatter and a march hare having an "unbirthday" party, and a Cheshire Cat, whose smile often appears well before he does. She finally runs into a pack of cards that is painting the blooms on a rosebush red. This leads to her meeting with the Queen of Hearts and catching up with the rabbit, who is the Queen's servant.

Off With Her Head

The Queen of Hearts is a very unstable woman who rules with an iron fist. Her mantra is "Off with his head!" So everyone is careful not to irritate or cross her in any way. She forces Alice to play croquet with her, and the Cheshire Cat appears, plays a practical joke on the Queen, and manages to frame Alice for it. Alice is put on trial, but it's a kangaroo court. There's no question that the sentence will be "Off with her head!" So Alice runs for it. She reaches the door and finds that she is simply asleep, and the only way to escape is to wake up. She shouts and shouts at her sleeping self beyond the door, but it is her governess who wakens her at last, ending her adventures of Alice in Wonderland.
